As King Henry I's daughter and only surviving legitimate child, Maud is very single-minded about succession. She and her illegitimate brother Gloucester go to war with King Stephen over her rightful claim to the crown. But Maud faces a major challenge from the many nobles who are unwilling to support her - because they feel that women have no place on the throne.
